A few rare creatures have their power and being tied to a specific word. IE: knowing that word can give one power over that creature.
This is not always a carte blanche do-what-thou-wilt card. How much control can be exerted depends on the source of the word.
What this effectively means is that only someone who has first-hand knowledge of the power name has full and total control of said being. As the name gets passed down, it's pronunciation, tempo, cadence and timbre is changed every so slightly and with each successive passing of the name, it becomes less commanding to the being who it belongs to.
The following breakdown will help determine what can be accomplished at a certain stage of the name.
First Hand: You have heard the name spoken directly from the being it belongs to or seen it written in their own hand. Near total control. Only totally self-destructive commands may be resisted. BE WARNED, many creatures that have power names are powerful enough that you will have to sleep with one eye open if you make it known that you have this power over them.
Second Hand: You have heard it from someone who heard it first hand. You may order tasks that the being ia ambivalent or unopposed to. Anything that is directly counter to their own goals can be resisted. There is still significant risk at this level.
Third Hand: You have heard it from someone who heard it second hand. You may give generic orders only, such as "do not leave this room." Specific commands, such as "find me volume four of the Encyclopedia Magicka" or even "attack my enemies." may be resisted. Careful wording must be used, as the very genericness this level imposes can be dangerous, providing ample opportunity for the being to retaliate.
Fourth Hand: You have heard it from someone who heard it third hand. Only very basic commands may be given and even then the being might be able to resist. This is probably the most dangerous level as you might be able to enforce a command that the being might not be entirely okay with...but then won't be able to enforce a command to stop their retaliation. Virtually the only command with a guarantee of success is "come forth", ordering the being to come to your position in a straightforward, non-sneaky manner.
Fifth Hand: You have heard it from someone who heard it fourth hand. Virtually no power. You might be able to enforce a "come forth" command. You have no way to know if you succeeded or not. And a past call unanswered may later bring them to you at an inopportune moment. Use extreme caution.
All power is lost after fifth hand knowledge. The being, however, is aware of anyone out to ninth hand knowledge speaking his power name. He attains by default the identity of the speaker and, with focus, can discern their location. Since most beings that have power names are capable of a form of swift travel (most can teleport), they can then choose to appear before the speaker of their name.
If the being chooses to spend the time, they may meditate in a divination trance that allows them to extend their sixth sense of their power name out to twelfth hand speakers. Most don't bother though.
All true fey have a power name. It is typically related to their common name, but even if someone manages to put it together themselves, that effectively counts as sixth hand knowledge and is thus useless. However, if you have done this and hear it spoken by someone with fifth hand knowledge, you gain fifth hand knowledge of the name instead. This functions with all power names, not just those of fey. However, the chances of guessing anyone else's power name is extremely low.
That is all.
